5 Things you should know about Leak Detection Systems.
- Upset Processing -
Many leak detection systems are unable process upset or transient conditions and tend to
either "temporarily shutdown" or generate false alarms until the pipeline
stabilizes.
- False Alarms - A
system that generates too many false alarms might as well be turned off. *
- Batch Tracking -
For accurate leak detection the API makeup of the pipeline is required.
- Instrumentation -
Many systems, especially model based systems require extensive and highly calibrated
instrumentation to function accurately.
- Maintenance - The
more complex and sophisticated a system is the more maintenance is required, generally by
a trained engineer or consultant.

From a Petroleum
News Vol. 11, No.20:
"It was a false alarm," Johnson said. "What we thought then and what we
think now
is that that was a process upset." Numerous previous false alarms
caused by process upsets lulled the operators into ignoring the several alarms during the
North Slope spill of 2006.
